The traditional languages of the Northeast are largely of the Iroquoian and Algonquian language families. Although many of the native peoples had fought in the Revolutionary War as British allies, Great Britain made no mention of their allies in the Treaty of Paris. See also Great Basin Indian. It is so named because the surrounding mountains create a bowl-like landscape that prevented water from flowing out of the region. Small kin-based bands were the predominant form of social organization, although seasonal gatherings of larger groups occurred at favoured fishing locales.
Wild plant foods, deer, other game, and fish for those groups living near rivers were the primary foraged foods. Several villages or hamlets formed a tribe, and groups of tribes sometimes organized into powerful confederacies. Native Americans form an ethnic group only in a very general sense.
Sedentary farmers such as the Hopi, the Zuni, the Yaqui and the Yuma grew crops like corn, beans and squash. The Cherokee language belongs to the Iroquoian branch of the Hokan-Siouan linguistic stock. The landscape includes several major river systems, notably those of the Colorado and the Rio Grande, that create linear oases in the region. There, they grew crops like corn, beans and vegetables.
The climate is warm temperate in the north and grades to subtropical in the south. The British and Tecumseh abandoned Detroit and fled east, where they were caught and destroyed as a military force. In he traveled to meet with leaders of the Five Civilized Tribes in the hope of uniting them with him in the confederacy in the north. The topography is generally rolling, although the Appalachian Mountains include some relatively steep slopes.
He was met with resistance and rejection, and only a fraction of the Creeks accepted his call to arms, leading to the later Creek War. The resource base was so rich that they are unique among nonagricultural peoples in having created highly stratified societies of hereditary elites, commoners, and slaves. Because they were always on the move, they lived in compact, easy-to-build wikiups made of willow poles or saplings, leaves and brush.
The major agricultural products were corn, beans, squash, and cotton. However, because most tribes were not centralized political units at the time, involvement in the confederacy was usually on a village rather than a tribal basis. The s discovery of gold in Cherokee territory resulted in pressure by settlers to obtain their lands.
The predominant ecosystems are grassland and high desert, although substantial forested areas are found at altitude. Towns often included large earthen mounds on which religious structures and the homes of the ruling classes or families were placed.

Supreme Court upheld the nation's autonomy, the state of Georgia secured an order for their removal, accomplished by military force. The peoples of this region were hunters and gatherers and generally organized themselves in mobile, kin-based bands. Fishing, hunting, and gathering shellfish and other wild foods were also highly productive. Plains Indians are also known for their elaborately feathered war bonnets.
